JOPLIN - Led by sophomore Jaime Villa Zapatero's fifth-place finish individually, the 18th-ranked Drury University men's cross country team finished third in the 20th annual Missouri Southern Stampede held Saturday at Hughes Stadium.
Villa Zapatero crossed the finish line in 25:19.05, more than a minute behind winner and freshman Daniel Kirwa of Harding (24:09.8). Sophomore Jonathan Chereno of Cowley County was second in 24:38.0. Drury junior Geoff Hughes was 11th in 25:54.5.
Harding won the men's team title with 38 points, well ahead of runner-up Missouri Southern (103). Drury finished third with 115 points.
In the women's division, the Panthers finished 17th in the 34-team field with 478 points. Tulsa was the runaway winner with 32 points, far ahead of runner-up Missouri Southern (135).
Individually for the DU women, sophomore Tia Young finished 79th to lead the Panthers, with a time of 19:44.7. Junior Stephanie Cowherd finished 112th in 20:19.4. Alex Becker, a senior for Tulsa, was the individual winner in 16:45.2.
Drury returns to action next Saturday in the Roy Griak Invitational in St. Paul, Minn.
