FLORENCE, Ala. - The Drury men's golf squad posted the second lowest round in the program's NCAA-II history a - 5-under par 283 - on Monday, and as a result, sit in second place after the opening round of the TVA Credit Union Classic hosted by the University of North Alabama.
The Panthers got a 4-under-par 68 from junior Thomas Hay to lead the way to the 283 score at the par-72 Blackberry Trail Golf Club, second only to the 282 round fired by Drury in the Heart of America Golf Invitational in 2002. Hay sits in second place individually, three strokes behind leader Jamie Voegeli of Missouri Southern.
Missouri Southern has the team lead after a 9-under-par 279 on Monday in the 36-hole event, which concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday. Host North Alabama is third at 284 in the 10-team field.
Other Drury scores and places on Monday included a 2-under-par 70 from junior Kyle Martin, who's tied for sixth; a 72 from freshman Shawn Vanderwal, tied for 11th; a 73 from junior Andrew Funk ((T19); and a 75 from senior Sam Steelman (T25).
DU sophomore Nick Sheppard, competing as an individual in the meet, also shot a 70 and is tied with Martin in sixth.
