OWENSBORO, Ky. - Drury, ranked sixth nationally, used two goals from senior Steve Wilczewski in a five-minute span early in the second half to rally past Kentucky Wesleyan 2-1 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer match on Friday.
Drury improved to 12-0 overall - best start in school history - and retained its lead in the GLVC standings with a 9-0 mark. Kentucky Wesleyan's Panthers fell to 4-11-1 and 1-9-1, but not without giving the visiting Panthers a scare.
Dustin Davis scored off a corner kick (A.J. Roberto assist) in the 31st minute to give KWC a 1-0 advantage that stood through halftime, and represented the first time Drury has trailed in a match al season.
But the Panthers responded quickly when Wilczewski, a Springfield Glendale product, scored off a rare assist from keeper Stephen Conner at 69:28 to tie the match, then took the lead when Wilczewski added an unassisted goal at 74:07, representing his ninth goal of the season and 27th of his career.
Drury outshot KWC by an 18-6 advantage in a match that saw Wesleyan pile up 21 fouls and five yellow cards.
The Panthers conclude their weekend GLVC road trip with a 2:30 p.m. (EST) match Sunday against Bellarmine in Louisville, Ky.
