INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Chase Elliott scored 17 points to lead five Panthers in double-figures as short-handed No. 14 Drury defeated Indianapolis 84-73 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play here on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Cable Hogue added a career-high 14 points and a team-high six rebounds as the Panthers - playing without leading scorer Alex Hall (suspension) and sophomore Dominique Long (death in the family) - improved to 18-4 overall and 11-2 in the GLVC.
"Coming off our performance on Thursday night, and some of those unique things and Alex not being able to play, Dominique not being here, and Indy coming off 15-point win over Rockhurst on Thursday ...," Drury coach Steve Hesser said. "We talked about our lack of teamwork on Thursday and prior to Thursday and we really supported each other today.
"We were happy for each other today when our team did positive things. We moved the basketball and found the open people ... we played together. That's our philosophy, that's our style, that's what we try to do at Drury. And we'd gotten away from that. Today we did it, showed some patience, got the ball in some good spots and the guys came through. A good job today by our entire team."
Dennon Mitchell and Chris Parks added 12 points each and Sahlih Butts had 10 points and five rebounds in his first start of the season. Freshman point guard Brandon Lockhart had just seven points, but also matched his career high with seven assists and added a team-high four steals.
Drury, in bouncing back from Thursday's 65-61 loss at Northern Kentucky in which Hall earned two technicals in separate incidents and a Saturday suspension per GLVC rules, kept alive its claim of not having dropped back-to-back games this season.
The Panthers got a big lift just before the half when Indy, in a 32-all tie, was playing for the last shot ... until Andrew Taylor stepped in front of a pass and took it in for the layup before the buzzer for a 34-32 lead. Drury improved to 15-0 now on the season when it leads the game at halftime.
Darius Adams had 18 points to lead Indy (12-11, 6-8), which was coming off a 15-point victory over visiting Rockhurst on Thursday.
The Panthers return home for three GLVC games next week, starting with nationally second-ranked and unbeaten Southern Indiana in an 8 p.m. tipoff on Tuesday. Drury is also home to face Maryville on Thursday night and Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday.
"No question Southern Indiana is very good," Hesser said. "We'll just go play our game and see what happens."
