All Drury students are encouraged to join "The Fanthers," the new student athletics support group that was formed in August of 2011 and already has made waves across the Great Lakes Valley Conference and the nation.
The Fanthers and their group within the group, the "Front Row Refs," were awarded the NCAA-II national "Award of Excellence for Game Environment" for 2011 by the NCAA during its annual convention in January, 2012 in Indianapolis for the way the group has enhanced the environment at Drury home sporting events, particularly in the O'Reilly Family Event Center for men's and women's basketball and volleyball.
Never has their present been felt greater than in Atlanta in April of 2013, when more than 300 Fanthers made the trip by bus to Atlanta to cheer Drury on to the NCAA-II men's basketball national championship. Their "I Believe" chant at the end became the stuff of legend, as they helped the Panthers hold on for a thrilling 74-73 victory over Metro State in the closing seconds (See video).
But the Fanthers - now featuring national restaurant chain Buffalo Wild Wings as their official sponsor -Â also can make their presence felt at a variety of DU athletic events, including home soccer, swimming, baseball, softball and tennis matches as well, bringing their zany antics along to support the Panthers and Lady Panthers, entertain other DU fans and ... OK, maybe try to work their way into the heads of a visiting opponent or two.
Benefits for DU students? Plenty. Camraderie with their peers for a common cause, cool Fanther t-shirts, headbands and other gear, deals at local restaurants who support the group as "Fanther Feeders" as well as giveaways at each home game, including frequent tailgate parties and other events to feed hungry students. But mostly ... a whole lot of fun.
The Fanthers are governed by a Student Advisory Board and have the full support of the Drury administration, which includes financing from the Student Government Association.
Â
The Fanthers are open to all DU students for membership. New for 2015-16: The Fanthers app on both the IPhone and Android app stores (Search: Drury or Fanthers), through our new partnership with national student loyalty group specialist SuperFan U, that's available for free download. Through the Fanther Freebies app, students receive points after "checking in" at DU sporting events, redeemable for great prizes and entry into contests.Â
