During the next three to four weeks, we will reveal our Drury Dozen – the top 12 moments from 2017-18 as voted on by members of the Drury University athletics media relations team that covered a variety of DU sports throughout the year.
The list on this countdown does not reflect the most
significant moments from the year, although the biggest games/events certainly played a part in our decision. Ultimately, these were our
favorite moments from the previous year and the ones that we will likely always associate with the 2017-18 sports season.
#12 – Trevor Richards makes MLB debut
The first moment on our Drury Dozen countdown isn't exactly a Drury event but is still a historic moment for both the Panthers baseball program and DU Athletics.
On April 2, Drury graduate and former baseball standout Trevor Richards made his debut in Major League Baseball in a start for the Miami Marlins. He became the first former Panthers baseball player to reach the majors.
While he took the loss, Richards did manage to strike out five Boston hitters in 4.1 innings. After a stint in Triple-A New Orleans in May, Richards returned to the big leagues and had through July 18, has a 3-5 record, a 4.74 ERA and has struck out 57 batters in 62.2 innings.
